Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library Computer Lab Policy

Overview

The Library’s Computer Lab is made available for public use under the following guidelines. Library staff will use professional discretion to address any issues not specifically covered by these guidelines.

Fees

There is no charge for using the computers. There is a printing charge of 15 cents per page. Patrons will be responsible for all pages printed including mistakes and multiple pages.

Usage

All patrons must notify a librarian and sign in to use the computers. All computers are available on a first come basis. There is a 30 minute time limit when another patron is waiting, beginning at the time of notification by the librarian. Patrons must end their session and leave the computer when asked to do so by library staff.

It is not acceptable to use any computer in a manner that disrupts normal use and service. Such disruption includes, but not limited to, the propagation of computer viruses, the violation of personal privacy, and the unauthorized access to protected and private network resources and altering system software of hardware configurations. Inappropriate or abusive use of the computer or software will result in the loss of computer privileges.

Internet

The Internet will not be used for illegal activity, to access illegal materials, or to access materials which by local standards would be considered obscene. Transmission of any material in violation of any federal or state statute or regulation is prohibited.

Persons under 18 must have parental supervision or a signed parental consent form in order to use the Internet.

The individual user, not the library, is responsible for the Internet sources accessed. Each user agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library and the Town of Summerdale from any claims resulting from their use of the Internet at the Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library.

Termination or Prohibition of User Access

Library staff are authorized to terminate any user’s session, or to prohibit a user from subsequent sessions, if given cause to believe that the user has failed to comply with the above rules and policy. Staff members will be asked to report such actions to the director.

Marjorie Younce Snook Internet Public Use Policy

The Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library provides access to the Internet in accordance with our mission to meet the informational, educational and recreational needs of our patrons.

The Internet is currently an unregulated medium. The information available therein includes much that is personally, professionally and culturally enriching. It also provides access to material that may be offensive to some, as well as access to information that may be factually incorrect and/or illegal. The library complies with all Federal and State laws governing the use of computers in libraries, including the guidelines established by the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA). The library does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the Internet and specifically disclaims any warranty as to the information’s accuracy, authoritativeness, timeliness, usefulness and fitness for a particular purpose. The user must determine whether the information is accurate, useful, and trustworthy or not.

 

As with other library materials, guidelines for a young person’s access to the Internet are the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian. Parental supervision or prior written authorization is required for all users under the age of 18. Written authorization for a minor must be signed in the presence of a librarian and will be kept on file at the Library.

 

Patrons may not use library computer workstation to access obscene or pornographic sites. If one is accessed inadvertently, it should be exited immediately. Acts or behavior not in compliance with the library's Computer Policies will result in the Patron's loss of Internet, computer and library privileges. This policy is strictly enforced.

 

As with all formats of information, patrons must respect copyright laws and licensing agreements and abide by general rules of acceptable Internet conduct.
